Jitterbugs Therapy Dog
As a nursery, we have been actively exploring various ways to enhance the well-being of both our children and staff within our setting. One of the exciting initiatives we’ve decided is to implement the introduction of a therapy dog. We believe that having a therapy dog can provide emotional support, help reduce anxiety and promote a calm and nurturing environment for everyone. Having a dog in the nursery offers a valuable opportunity for children to learn how to care for living animals, which plays a significant role in their development at this age. By interacting with the dog, children can develop a sense of responsibility and empathy as they help with tasks such as feeding, grooming, and ensuring the dog’s well-being. This hands-on experience allows them to understand the needs of another living being and fosters a nurturing attitude, helping to build emotional intelligence. Additionally, it encourages children to develop important life skills such as patience, kindness, and respect for animals, all of which contribute to their development at this age.
To ensure that we choose the right dog for our nursery, Linda, our director and owner, has taken the lead in conducting thorough research on this subject. She has delved into various studies and expert recommendations to identify the most suitable dog breeds for interacting with young children in a learning environment. Linda’s research has focused on finding a breed that is not only gentle and friendly but also has a calm temperament and is hypoallergenic to ensure the safety and comfort of all the children, including those with allergies or sensitivities. Her careful consideration of these factors reflects our commitment to creating a positive and supportive atmosphere where children can thrive emotionally and socially. We are confident that the introduction of a therapy dog will be a wonderful addition to our nursery and will greatly contribute to the well-being of our community.
Winnie has undergone professional training by a dog trainer prior to her introduction to the children. This specialized training ensures that she is well-prepared for her role in a nursery setting, where she will interact closely with young children. The training has focused on developing her calm and gentle temperament, teaching her how to remain composed in busy environments, and responding appropriately to children’s behaviours. By receiving this professional preparation, the dog is not only well-behaved but also equipped to provide therapeutic benefits while maintaining a safe and positive atmosphere.

Winnie is a Cavapoo F1B, a hypoallergenic dog. Her breed is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. She is 25% Cavalier King Charles and 75% Toy Poodle. A Cavapoo F1B does not shed, has a very curly, cuddly coat, and is highly tolerant of children, making her the perfect nursery pet. The dog, Winnie, lives with Linda at her home, where she is lovingly cared for to ensure all of her needs are met. By having Winnie live with her, Linda is able to provide consistent and attentive care, ensuring that Winnie is healthy, well-fed, and emotionally supported.
